Our Story
iTerp is a Deaf-owned sign language interpreting agency created by Cynthia (aka Cindy Beth) Ross and Gil McWhorter, both graduates of the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in Rochester, N.Y.
While studying at RIT, their knowledge for sign language became stronger and speaking the language became more fluent into their daily lives. Today, Cindy Beth and Gil rely on sign language interpreters during meetings at work, appointments at doctor’s offices, making phone calls through video-relay services (VRS) and so forth.
American Sign Language (ASL) is a constant-growing language that can be used through technology and in-person interpretation. Following many years of receiving wonderful support from the hard-working sign language interpreters, frustrations continued to grow within the industry, specifically from the D/deaf and hard-of-hearing (HOH) community. Rather than ignoring the frustrations, Cindy Beth and Gil decided to do something about it – create iTerp!
Understanding the Frustration
One Of The Primary Frustrations For Many, If Not All, D/Deaf And HOH Individuals Must Deal With Is The Lack Of Freedom Scheduling Meetings And Appointments At The Convenience Of Their Schedule And Not The Provider And Their Policies With Interpreting Agencies.
A doctor’s appointment can take up to one or two weeks to schedule, depending on the availability of the interpreter and the agencies they work for. This barrier is eliminated on our user-friendly platform, allowing providers (e.g. doctor’s offices, law firms and etc.) to request a sign language interpreter with the simple click of a button.
iTerp’s phenomenal team of developers built a custom proprietary booking system that makes booking an interpreter simple and convenient. Your time is valuable and the amount of time it takes to request an interpreter is nearly effortless and can be done for same-day appointments.
No more phones calls and no more emails for requesting an interpreter. As part of our innovation, the moment a provider submits the request for an interpreter is the moment all sign language interpreters in your area will receive the request.
